Through quick and creative presentations, students are asked to present to the Tourism Congress audience on topics at the heart of TIAC’s advocacy mission.

Students, as an individual or as a team of two, are asked to submit a 3-minute video and a one-pager of information on their choice of one of three pre-chosen topics: Sustainability, Labour, and Technology.

The winning student(s) will be given the opportunity to give a TED Talk presentation at Tourism Congress 2019 and present their findings to over 300 Tourism leaders.

TIAC is proud to nurture the upcoming generation of tourism practitioners and leaders, and they’re looking forward to seeing some creative entries.

TTRA Canada Chapter 2019 Call for Participation Released

April 8, 2019

Conference Information:

Moving Forward, this year’s conference theme, invites tourism researchers to be forward thinkers; to rediscover Canada’s tourism industry through various lenses that acknowledge the past while providing guidance for our future. A future that inspires authentic cultural experiences for travellers, while providing interactive opportunities for practitioners. Moving Forward calls for impactful tourist experiences across various niche tourism markets, bringing destinations to life and providing tourists with unforgettable travel experiences. Canada’s future tourism seeks to break down barriers and empower stakeholders to work together to deliver innovative research methodologies. This year’s conference in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, will highlight the path ahead, focusing on new ways of thinking about tourism in order to capitalise on emerging technologies, methodologies, and societal changes.

Submission Information:

Submissions for presentations, papers, workshops, and student posters are invited relating to the overarching theme of Moving Forward. Submissions may be on a range of tourism-related topics and the Conference Program Committee also encourages presentations on topics that are outside the general theme – our goal is to provide content that is relevant, timely and of interest to our members. Accepted submissions will be eligible for one of three non-monetary awards for best paper (refereed abstracts), best presentation (non-refereed), and best student poster/presentation.

Submission Deadline: May 31, 2019

The full Call for Participation can be found HERE.

Special Issue Call for Papers from the International Journal of Event and Festival Management

December 4, 2018

Information and Communication Technologies at Festivals

Special issue call for papers from the International Journal of Event and Festival Management

Guest Editors

Dr. Christine M. Van Winkle, University of Manitoba, Canada – [email protected]

Dr. Kelly J. MacKay, Ryerson University, Canada

Context

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have transformed communication in all life domains (Poushter 2016). Technology-mediated experiences are changing the festivalscape as festivals integrate hardware, software, netware, and humanware into the attendee experience (Neuhofer, Buhalis & Ladkin 2014; Robertson, Yeoman, Smith & McMahon-Beattie 2015; Van Winkle, MacKay, & Halpenny 2018). ICT has been used at festivals for utilitarian and hedonic purposes yet little is known about the implications for the events, attendees, volunteers, and other stakeholders. ICT integration into festival administration, design, marketing, operations, and risk management has received limited attention in festival studies; therefore, this special issue will examine the current state and future implications of ICT in the festival context in all phases of the festival from planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating (Silvers, Bowdin, O’Toole, & Nelson 2005). A broad overview of research and theory in this emerging area will provide a needed foundation to guide future research. This special issue will cover a range of topics from both demand and supply perspectives and will bring ideas from diverse disciplines. Qualitative and quantitative approaches to research are welcomed. Through discussion, debate, exploration and evaluation insight into the broad implications of ICT for festivals will be gained. All submissions will be peer-reviewed.

Theme

This special issue seeks to include research papers exploring all forms of ICT in festival settings

Papers on the following topics are of particular interest

  • ICT use for safety and security
  • Rejection of ICT at festivals
  • Internet of things within the festivalscape
  • Social media for engaging festival attendees and volunteers
  • ICT and inclusive accessible festivals
  • Co-creation of festival experiences and ICT
  • Enhanced and virtual reality experiences at festivals

Key Dates

Full Paper Submissions: January 18, 2019

Revisions/Final Decisions:  May 31, 2019

Publication: October 2019

Submission Process

Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to contact the guest editors regarding potential topics of interest or any questions relating to the special issue.  Full papers must be submitted by January 18th, 2019 through ScholarOne Manuscripts, the online submission and peer review system at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ijefm. Please select the correct issue to submit to: “Information and Communication Technologies at Festivals”.  Author guidelines for IJEFM can be found at:http://emeraldgrouppublishing.com/products/journals/author_guidelines.htm?id=ijefm
