Opportunity: Effect of Inbound Tourism on Canada's Export Industries
A research project examining the relationship between inbound international tourism arrivals and Canadian export growth. The work will update and expand on previous research with new data analysis and stakeholder insights.
Project Overview
Destinations International and the Canadian Destination Leadership Council (CDLC) seek a qualified firm to study the relationship between inbound international tourism and Canadian export growth. This research will build on previous studies and provide data-driven analysis, case studies, and stakeholder insights to show how tourism contributes to Canada’s broader economic objectives.
Scope of Work
- Literature Review:
- Analyze existing academic and industry research.
- Focus on the 2014 Deloitte “Passport to Growth” report and its references (Keum, Poole).
- Data Analysis:
- Quantitative modeling using public datasets (Destination Canada, Statistics Canada).
- Examine tourism’s correlation with growth in key export sectors.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
- Interviews with CDLC members and other stakeholders.
- Collaborate with DI on outreach and interview coordination.
- Deliverables:
- Bilingual report (English/French) with visuals and case studies.
- PowerPoint deck with speaker notes.
- 1–2 page summary document.
- Social media toolkit.
- Virtual webinar and in-person presentation at TIAC Congress (Nov. 2025, Gatineau, QC).
Qualifications Required
- Expertise in economic modeling and Canadian tourism/trade data
- Experience influencing public policy through research
- Strong stakeholder interview and synthesis skills
- Bilingual capabilities (English/French)
- Alignment with DI’s social impact values
